* The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck (2005, 1931)

Another classic that I missed as a student, this is a story that reads like a parable, full of lessons, morals, truths.  It’s essentially a rags to riches story of a family that eventually falls apart in the pre-revolution period in China.  I”m not sure I would have loved it as a high school student, but I liked it as an adult, especially as a parent.  (fiction)
