* The Adventures of Kavalier and Clay by Michael Chabon (2001)

This is one strange book that grew on me until I found that I really liked it.  It chronicles the beginnings of comic books, how they started and how they competed.  A fictional book set in New York, it is steeped in fact and brings together Jewish culture, comic book characters, WWII, homosexuality, and much more!  It may take a bit to get into this one, but it’s worth it.  (fiction)
