*** John Adams by David McCullough (2002)

I had this book for more than a year before I finally started it, but once in, I couldn’t put it down.  It reads like fiction.  I was stunned at the politics of the 1700s–the factions, infighting, gladhanding, bruised egos–it’s all there.  Yet amid this, the integrity, diligence, and commitment of John and Abigail Adams is so admirable.  This is a fabulous way to learn history.  Ditch the textbook.
