** All Aunt Hager’s Children by Edward P. Jones (2006)

A book of short stories that’s complex and unique.  The stories take place in Washington DC and they illustrate the African-American experience of everyday people seeking a better life.  Each story includes layers of plot and characters such that it requires careful and close reading.  Just about the time I would have a good handle on a story, he’d introduce another subplot or character and I’d have to dig in and think hard again.  But, it’s worth it.  (fiction/short story)
